This scene done in UDK uses a single 256x512 texture for everything. This demonstrates what a great artist can do with a great engine.

Wow! That is absolutely amazing! At first I thought, "Somebody is lying." (Not you, of course) Then I thought about it! Yes, it could be done, and like you said, "a great artist with a great engine" (paraphrased). I thought about UV mapping and how it works, and I realized that something like that could be done, by (I think) using the "texture" as more or less a palette and mapping your geometry accordingly. It would take someone far more skilled than I will ever, or wish, to be! I played with UDK briefly a couple years back, and I was just beginning to get a grasp of it when Reloaded came about. I've been in these parts for the past decade, so I think I'll stay here, and perhaps play around again with UDK from time to time!

I was looking into this myself and found out that he stored different textures in different layers of the same image. The alpha channel, for example are these holograms you see floating around. Quite clever!
