Can someone please tell why some forum members have large reloaded backer badges and others are small.
Does it have to do with the price level of the pledge?

Above the profile images is a little "edit" button if you click it, that will let you choose the large icon you wish to use, the only reason some users have large images is that they have chosen too from that menu.

I am curious though, just how would one have known this.
Did I miss some obvious information somewhere?

A lot of the users here are from the FPSC classic forums and it was announced over there when the feature was added, it is not the most obvious button so will likely be changed in future so people spot it.
