Come up with a idea for a game, set somewhere in the Star Wars universe. Since this is a fan game and for free, i wonder if this is legal? Can I post in on the web for everyone to play? etc etc etc

Nope. At least not without permission from Disney, who now own Lucasfilm.

If you make it a parody and it's non-profit then you can get away with it.

asked on a SW fan forum, and one said "if you're giving the game away for free they can't really come after you for anything; at worst they'll tell you to stop, at best they buy the game from you."

tom is right, a parody would be perfectly legal, (think "Spaceballs"; "Blue Harvest" was done with Lucas' blessing; not sure about them not being able to come after you even if it's free. I do know that Lucasfilm was very protective of Star Wars IP. They went after Glen Larson for "Battlestar Gallactica" back in the 70's claiming it was too much like Star Wars, even though all the special effects were created/shot in Lucas' studios. I thought that pretty aggressive, It seemed like, "Here, we'll help you make this, then we'll sue you because it's too much like our stuff." You may want to check out some Star Wars fan sites or even Lucasfilms themselves. I'm sure that info is around the net somewhere! Good luck!

Be smart and don't listen to a bunch of fans on the Star Wars forum. It would be wrong to do it straight up even if it's free. People are so easily falling into the mindset that copyright isn't important, but the truth is that it's outright theft if you were to do it even for free. It has to be a parody or you are stealing their property. Lucasfilm has been supportive of fan films and will likely continue to do so, but that's a whole different ball game.

I guess the bottom line is that you are treading on dangerous ground. Get all your ducks in a row, dot your i's and cross your t's. Get permission first, then tread with caution still. I think the parody idea would be great though; it would be nice to see some humor put into a video game! I think the possibilities are endless there!

In general, if you think something isn't legal, it probably isn't. Using anything that isn't yours, even as a basis is dangerous ground to walk on.

looks if you do want to make a Star Wars game, the best thing to do is call it something else(the story maybe star wars compatible) and you can still have your stormtroopers(although they can't look similar), and you can still have force powers(just don't call it the force), and a light-saber(just make sure there are differences).

So while you still are making a star wars game, its not star wars... Also Btw Lucas film/arts no longer exists and are just a legal entity. The rights to making a star wars game are not in the hands of Disney, but EA. So if you want to make one you have to contact them.

You'd be able to make it but you'd not be able to profit off it. The worst that could happen is a cease and desist letter from Disney if it became popular.

By the way that animation video is great

Love that video as well! Back to your original idea of a fan game, it certainly wouldn't hurt to email them and ask (although I've seen some painful replies from corporate offices that have made the news). I don't mean the office where some unknown person posts a reply, I mean do some research, find out who is really in charge, and ask them!

BTW, I subscribed! Looking forward to more!
