Hi everyone, I have been going on photography expedition snapping textures of all sorts in the past couple of weeks. The weather has been great and the natural sunlight, just perfect. I have grown comfortable with using 1024x1024 texture maps but was curious what the negative effects of using anything higher may be?

I'm starting to notice recently with more complex models you need a little bit more room to play around with more texture pieces on the same map (.dds). Are there any negative factors that come in to play with using higher resolution images? I noticed a few asset developers in the store using higher than 1024x1024.

Ive been basically creating 1024x1024 72 DPI textures. Would it be best practice to use a higher resolution?

I always use 2048px, same as Henry. I am sometimes tempted to use 4096px and try to cram as much detail in as possible, but, that's just silly......for now.....

All of my models in the store have 2048px texture maps. That way, if the user wants to scale them down to save some memory, they can do with not much loss of detail.

Cheers

Jay.

Thanks guys, this is great feedback as I've realized that the default texture size I've been working with is a tad too small. I'm assuming in the FPE of every entity they can reduce the textures themselves right? With the reduce texture field?

I'm not 100% sure about each model being able to reduce its own texture, I thought it was controlled globally in the setup.ini. But, I could be wrong (it has happened once before!)

One more note, I saw in your post above that you are saving your textures at 72dpi. That is the best resolution for on screen graphics like websites etc. I always save my textures at 300dpi. That is more suited to print media due to the higher pixels per inch, so, I figure, the player is going to be fairly close to the texture map, why not increase the pixel density.

Cheers

Jay.

Thanks! I totally came back to ask what DPI you guys might be using.
