Well, Windows XP has had it's run with Microsoft and is now pretty much unsupported because of it's lengthy success. Vista's final days are rapidly approaching also, but to relate to your concerns about the DirectX, the interface known as DX11 has no problem sorting out the hardware details of Vista run computers - I've had it aiding mine for a long time now. I don't see why programs that relied on older versions of the DX API series should start having problems, though. The newer versions are simply meeting the challenges imposed by newer hardware technologies to be able to have programs that can communicate with a wide variety of component configurations found in gpu's, sound cards, processors and mother boards, etc.

All you need is love....so let me have your burger.

FPSC:R is DirectX 9 only. Support for DX9 won't be going away anytime soon as a large majority of PC games depend on it. As long as the installer for FPSC:R and games made with it do a proper check and install the DX9 library if it isn't already installed, there will be no problems. This is what most games on Steam do when you install them the first time.

I'm not so sure with the end of xp around the corner and a lot of new games need dx10 or above and a 64bit OS.

Support for old dx9 does seem closer and closer to its end.

I feel FPSCR will at some point need to move on to dx11 at least and 64bit to keep with the times.

For the time dx9 will work fine on all machine at the moment.

It's possible x11 will be investigated in the future, currently it is felt that with 33% of the worlds PC still running XP (From my understanding that's 500 million machines)., that x9 should be supported.

WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) is based on DX9 and Microsoft used WPF for the development of Visual Studio 201x (2010, 2012, 2013.) DX9 will be around for a while but I would not assume it will not be made obsolete in a few years. I would not move to DX11 but rather OpenGL 4.x. That way it would be one step towards being cross-platform.

I still have dx7 and dx8 games from the 90's that work just fine. I'm not sure that just because support is ending for Windows XP that dx9 will suddenly just refuse to work anymore, since dx9 is not bound to Windows XP. Even thoug games are quickly moving toward dx11, the library of dx9 games is just too huge to sandbag.

The move to dx11 will probably be necessary sometime in the future, but I don't think it is something to worry about for quite a while.
