Will it be possible to have the doppler effect so that sounds become incrementally louder the closer you get to the source?

Doppler effect

[dop-ler]

noun Physics.

( often lowercase ) the shift in frequency (Doppler shift) of acoustic or electromagnetic radiation emitted by a source moving relative to an observer as perceived by the observer: the shift is to higher frequencies when the source approaches and to lower frequencies when it recedes.

Not to be critical, but what you are asking for is not the Doppler effect, more like a 3d sound projected from the direction of the object, based on the position from the player camera, while the sound is playing.

That would be a nice addition in the future.

You get the same effect, irrespective of whether the listener or the source is moving.

Pirate Myke's point is that doppler has nothing to do with volume level, which is what you were insinuating in your OP. It has to do with frequency shift. In "audible" terms, that means the pitch changes (up or down based on whether source and observer are getting closer or further away).

And in terms of "variations in the frequency of waves as a result of the relative motion of the wave source with respect to the observer" as it is commonly referred, means the variations are due to either or both moving. However, from "the perspective of the observer", the source is interpreted as moving regardless if it is the observer doing the movement. And as Pirate Myke stated it "by a source moving relative to an observer as perceived by the observer" makes the same inference.

So you basically just said the same thing he pointed out.

Yes but from the perspective of the listener the volume seems to change relative to the distance from the source. Obviously in the context of the game engine the same effect could only be acheived by changing the volume, thats what i meant.

I don't think anyone would disagree that a source sound portrays a volume level related to the distance between listener and source. Just that doppler has nothing to do with it.

The volume level perspective is related to distance, and has nothing to do with motion. Doppler is related to motion, and has nothing to do with distance.

Sorry if we got all "technical" on you.
