I'm trying to get my head around character model at the moment and I was wondering which way was best for animating a character in fpscr?
I know bones gives greater control but does both ways work?

Both ways should work. depending on the kind of rig you need to create.
Biped has all the joint restricted as a humanoid would be.
Bones has the freedom of rotating and rigging how you wish.
Has been advised in recent couple of years to use skinning and not physique.
Hope this helps out.

Great thanks !
Biped will do the job nicely, I will try bones as I get more confident.
I gather physique does not export correctly but skin does?

It is a matter of the way the physique mesh transfers for exchanging into other programs thru FBX and other exporters. If you are not going to be bringing the model into another program then it should not matter.
They still seem to function on the older models I have done. But all new work is using skinning instead.
