Finally, here we got our own thread for

Into the Ice

We are rolling out the first Alphas for ITE in August, these are still created in X9 and their main purpose is to show some new Gameplay elements in action.

As soon as the first rolling FPSCR hits our dev stations, we will move to Reloaded. This means that all visuals and assets used now are in no way final quality.

Story:

Yes, you are Pete O´Brannon again, aka Peter Brenner. After your glorious failure in the final Level of Into the Dark, you were rewarded with 2 Mio. $. With such an huge amount of cash at hands, you rushed to a tropical island with your female sidekick Samantha. You thought your investigator days were over...

...but you were wrong.

Agent Smith, who had monitored and led your previous operation, re-activates you to infiltrate the secret base in New Swabia, Antarctica, the origin of the mysterious UFO and the Nazi-styled soldiers who hijacked the data in the final battle of "Into the Dark".

But first, you have to get into the British Rothera Station in Antarctica to rescue Agent Jonathew Iustin Conner, a Romanian-born, now US-citizen - and CIA field agent. As he is the only one who knows the exact location of the entrance to New Swabia, the CIA finds it VERY disturbing that contact was lost to Rothera Station 2 days ago. Time to get in and find out!

Screenshot 1:

So, what´s new?

In addition the same amount of trash, bad jokes, pop culture references and a totally inbalanced mixture of Adventure and Shooter, we will have two additional gameplay elements:

1. You can freeze to death.

Well, now it´s not "to death", but you can freeze to a state where you are so slow that movement becomes almost impossible. How does it look like?

Well, the first sign is you are getting slowed slightly and the screen gets the first pieces of ice:

You can de-frost yourself by finding sources of heat. If you don´t, you will end like:

As there are 18 stages between those two, you have time to react and heat yourself up.

2. Fasci-Nation:

This is something very special, and I don´t want to reveal all details right now, but basically it can lead to Peter turnign his cloak and joining the New Swabia troops.

How can you get those X9-based Alphas?

Well, there are 3 options:

1. Buy "Into the Dark". All Desura ITD customers will get the Alphas.

2. Buy your ticket in the upcoming Desura Alpha funding, Indiegogo and perhaps also Kickstarter campaigns.

3. You are one of the masterminds and great contributors here - in this case I will send you Alphas occasionally.

Estimated Release:
End of 2014

b]And here some RELOADED footage/b]

Gorgeous screenshots. I can't wait to see how the room blob tool will work out for us. I am still using X9 till then personally.

Love the atmospheric wind sounds you added there... really make me feel COLD watching that video :p

Looks really nice! Were those screenshots from X9 or FPSCR?

I had a look at the video and it looks decent. I have to ask though, what's up with the zooming? It looks as if the camera is simply moved further forwards, rather than the traditional method.

Aw i love it. great scene.

As an idea have a look at my post and look at the 3rd image,

i think it would make your icy scene look even better as i feel your water would look better looking more icy colour Thus help hide/reduce the ground colour from being seen through the water.

so you could slow the water till it hardly moving, and reduce the reflection as freezing water absorbs light and does not reflect it unless it is surface ice where the light spectrum changes/ reflects.

Ok i shall not lecture on

not sure if you new about these setting in the water_basic.fx

Anyway just thought to mention.

here is my post link.

Hi all,

we have some very busy months behind us, and there is time to share some news.

First of all, we have released our FPSC classic (X9) prime rib game "Into the Dark" on Steam and are right now in the middle of Steam Summer Sale madness:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/266050/

Second, we invested 2 more months prototyping in Reloaded and implemented a second task force at GDC to evaluate Unreal 4.

Last week we had to make the tough decision with what we will proceed and which engine will be left behind for the moment. As some of you already know, we switched to Unreal 4 after running a first test session that can be viewed here:

http://www.indiedb.com/games/into-the-ice/videos/hello-unreal

Don´t get me wrong: We still use Reloaded and Classic for rapid prototyping of basic game ideas, and we will for sure make an entire game with Reloaded in the not-so-distant future, but Into the Ice is going to be something Unreal for sure.

Its sad to see that you feel that Unreal is the better choice for the Into series, but, you obviously have your reasons. As I was watching the Unreal video, I just kept thinking, this is NOTHING like the original game. Not sure if that is a bad thing, but, then again, not sure if its a good thing. I will keep watching the progress of your game.

Best of luck.

Cheers

Jay.

It's easy to see why you made this decision. I'm considering jumping into UE4 myself very soon. The possibilities are endless. No restrictions to hold me back.

That is a dangerous misunderstanding. Unreal has severe limits in some areas.

No, not compared to reloaded.
But the Blueprint system needs quite some time to get into, and even if you are proficient there, it´s not said that you can do everything with it.

Unreal gives full source code, so there really aren't any restrictions as to where I could take it. In any case, I'm using Unity right now instead. I have Unreal 4, but probably won't be doing anything serious with it for a long time.

Screw both of you! Reloaded is way more fun

@Ertlov: You plan on keeping the old humorous formula for Ice? The video looks like you folks are prototyping for a serious shooter to me

You are right, I should!

Are you going to use FPSC Models (the good old nazi zombies and mutants) or create new ones?

Well....
Never say never again.

While I still feel that our way with Unreal 4.x is a good one, I am back to reloaded and will make at least one spin-off level or Teaser level to be released to the public.

Make it a prequel about the backstory of the brothel-tentacle monster from ITD.

Well, not much to say. Except the fact that with the recent beta release, and after several Q&As with our focus group testers, we are back on reloaded for Into the Ice.

While I think Reloaded will eventually be a worthy game engine to develop games from, maybe a year from now, why would you stop using a great engine like Unreal 4 that would allow you to make your game right now with the highest quality level possible? That just makes no sense to me.

even if its not my thread i kinda feel i have to say somethin to this as well.

Am usin Reloaded even if i could use
a) my own engine sorta (still in developement)
b)ue4
c)idtech4

hell ye why am usin reloaded is simply i dont need extra manpower and i dont need to worry about much
only about the art style of my game and its gameplay and i dont need to pay fees for usin reloaded.
For example all i need would be some full screen shaders and some extra functions here n there and reloaded would be almost ready to produce a game.

Eassy enough to answer:

We built the first level both in ue4 and reloaded.
Then we made focus group testing with 12 players.
10 prefered the reloaded version, 1 ue4, and one said both are equal.

Not much left to consider

As a result of the latest update, a voting among the Homegrown Games members and the huge success of "Father's Island", the development of Into the Ice has been switched back to GameGuru.

Not much to show yet, but that will change drastically during the next weeks and months.

They had them planned, and our "into" games base upon the assumption that the Nazis finished some of the crazy WonderWeapons programs they rolled out during the last days of WWII.

See Into the Dark!

And wow, what a day! I just came home from a meeting regarding my latest external" project

Qualify for the Red Bull Mindgamers Championship here!

to see that:

And one of the most important Austrian newspapers put that beast online, for those of you who speak German perhaps an interesting read:

Webstandard Report

So yes, you can build up quite something based on FPSC and now GameGuru. But don't forget it took 10 years to get there!

Allright, back to Into the Ice...
