Just for fun lets start a rename list...
I get to go first.

"Elite 3d"
"Innovator 3d"
"New worlds 3d"
"Visionary 3d"
"Powerhouse 3d"

The word Game could be added if needed also TGC.
Give it a crack, it could be fun, beats waiting for 1.009...

You could just call it the Reloaded engine or the Dark engine (as in DBPro).

At the end of the day, when it's released on Steam it will still be a FPS creator, as other types of games can't be done at this time, so you may just have to stay true to the name.

I haven't heard any new names yet that really resonate with me yet, but I definitely think the first person part has to go. It won't be long before it'll be doing 3rd person as well and the sooner they drop the idea that it can only do first person, the better.

we have 1st person, we have flight(to a degree) we have word that there is going to be 3rd person, we have a scripting language, conkit and importer is in it's way and it has been said before that Lee intends to make every aspect customisable . it's going to be a complete package, nothing left out , raw, uncut for the taking if you so desire??? so I'm thinking it should be called 'UnCut - 3d Game Creation'

Compared to "First Person Shooter Creator" I preferred the educational-branded name TGC had used in the past: "First Person Game Creator" which is more open-ended. Other old TGC product names were quite free thinking like this (3D Gamemaker, Freedom Engine) but of course we can't reuse those here.

The Reloaded word is nice to keep. Dropping it and reverting the name back to "FPS Creator" for the Steam release (as suggested in Lee's blog) would open a pandora's box of trouble as anyone who Googles it will find infinite old and obsolete sources from the original, with the new version buried in the mix. For the reason of clarity and truly separating the classic and current, dropping the whole 'FPS Creator' part could even be considered (hey I like Reloaded3D too ). The downside of this is that by ridding the title of "First Person Shooter" or "FPS" you may also lose a lot of SEO power due to the immense popularity of the genre.

Exactly. I think First Person should definitely be dropped. With just one minor fix to the Physics/Gravity system I could even have a primitive 3rd person controller right now. And with a few added Lua commands, I could have an almost feature complete 3rd person controller. So, this is not as far off as some might think.

Though Reloaded can and will be used potentially if not developed by design to develop other types of 3D worlds for various purposes. "Games" in general are a big area of human activity and interest.

Personally I don't have a preference for a name but it can help a product to be found and if a max of sales is required it should reflect its capabilities overall though Games I guess will always be the most important aspect of its use.

Reloaded3D is a safe bet I should think and there's no ideal name for a comprehensive 3D world generator product if it is well designed to create a wide variety of such worlds and content for various end product usages. In the game world at least most people search I guess for game engine or game maker though one could find out exactly the reality of the matter. Google knows.

Not sure that taking the name out of fps in particular or game making in general at this time is a good idea as the number of potential users to be attracted is enormous. You just have to get the product good enough to attract them rather than chasing smaller numbers of users I presume by changing the name and potentially direction of main use. I always said that the name wont make or break it but the product quality will. (given a name is not completely out of line or sinc with the product or offensive and or such like).

The name of course then in the main will not matter so I don't have a preference as said personally. You can always change the name at any time now included though care should always be used in a commercial product identity and promotion. These things can be hit and miss with we humans being what we are.

At the end of the day TGC have many commercial aspirations and aspects to consider and only they know perhaps where they are now and where they want it all to go.

Whatever certainly more pledgers/users are needed and not less so should be considered in that light I would think.

Reload3D Engine, get it, the 3 is a backwards E but makes 3D.... But then people might call it Reload 3D Engine separating the two words. I always refer to it as Reloaded and the predecessor as Classic so Reloaded Engine sounds good to me. I also like Dark Engine or Dark Game Engine. I feel FPS & Creator need to be dropped as it just sounds like a kid program to me. If that's what they're going for, great. But I think the target audience is more adults, maybe teens. If kids want to make a game, there's Project Spark. If you want to have something for educational purposes, I don't really feel like this is it. I mean shooting guys in the face and blood spurting out is not quite what I think a school is going to want to use. Just my personal opinion of what I'm guessing an educational institute might think, not what I necessarily think. One more thing, make sure Reloaded is in a good state because Steam users are ruthless! They'll tear it apart in comments and reviews in no time if it's not up to par. And people do read the reviews, I've passed up on a LOT of games that I thought I wanted until I read the reviews.

Choosing a new name after so long is the HARDEST thing 'e.v.e.r' I do like Dark Engine a lot but only because it's the first brand I ever used and there is something about the 'Dark Horse' I still find alluring! As with all democratic processes, the chances of reaching agreement is nil squared. Keep them coming though, one name will emerge to rule them all!

If "FPS" (First person shooter) is to be abandoned because of the violent aspect then it stands to reason "Reloaded" should also not be part of the name because the general public is not aware of the history of "Reloaded" (another generation of an "FPS" gamming engine).

In another life, I had several experiences, of clients wanting our design team to make suggestions for architectural development projects. The question to us was always the same "We need a name that will stick in peoples minds", my usual response was " I'll bet you have a couple ideas on the subject lets hear them".
The client usually has a theme he/she wants to pursue, after a week or so a submittal of several possible project names is greeted with "My associates and I really think my wife, brother, family doctor ETC, ETC, think .... we should use one your concepts that is in line with one of our original ideas ."

The point being, Lee has a direction he wants to flesh out and perhaps we might try to develop a few concepts that reflect his affection for the word "Dark".
Example: "Dark 3d Creator" (D3dC) if the word Dark is to heavy we might use DRK 3d creator (D3dC) or "DRK 3d Engine" (D3dE).

Have fun with it ...

Dark Renaissance 3D.

Implies that there was a previous version and sounds attractive.

Also the abreviation would be "D.R.3.D" as in DRED

I have to say that I'm not fond of any names with Dark in them. Dark has a connotation of evil and I'm not a fan of evil. Nothing has really stood out as a great new name for me yet and I don't have any ideas yet myself.

Well then ...Renaissance 3D

I added dark just because it was a running theme in TGC Product names. Dark basic, Dark GDK, Dark Matter...

Quote: "Dark Quest"

Quest, in modern english, is usually related to tales and fantasy so it sounds a bit out of place. Good name otherwise.

TGC, as mentioned in Wolf posting, has precedence with the use of "Dark".
Dark Game Studio, Dark Basic Pro, Dark Basic, Dark GDK, Dark Matter, Dark Shader, Dark Voices.

Based on previous use I don't think we need to shy away from a documented company theme.

If we're going with the 'dark' theme, just something like 'Dark Engine' sounds good to me, but I guess maybe a little too generic :/

Or how about FPFusion, as in 'First Person fusion', or just FPEngine?

Question

Why change the name "FPS creator reloaded"

I will break down the current name.

"FPS"

TGC can frame their sales promotion around "First Person Shooter" and or "First Person Simulator"

Guaranteed great goggle search hits, the majority of users searching for game making software are familiar with this tag.

Comment= Keep it

CREATOR

Very descriptive of the product, precise and accurate.

Comment= Keep it (changing to "Game Creator" would make the name stronger)

RELOADED

Basically a meaningless search tag for TGC purpose.

The only people to focus on the word "Reloaded" would be those who are

familiar with the original FPS creator. A huge percent of the potential buyers

(those outside of the current TGC world) have never heard of the original program thus the word contributes nothing to the value of the name.

Comment="Lose it"

Suggested new name

"DarkBasic 3d Game Creator" (Use DARKBASIC as a one word brand)

Comment= Each individual word is descriptive of the new software.

I believe that DARKBASIC is acceptable because it is written using DBpro

I see! I believe you are a logical person which is why you broke down the name this systematically...however, most people are not. Reloaded is useless in the title but it sounds attractive. Unity, CryEngine, UnrealEngine all have "cool" sounding attractive (and attracting) names. "DarkBasic 3D Game Creator" describes the program perfectly but sounds as unattractive as a brick.

Its not only about being found via search engine, but also about being chosen over more seasoned products.

My cars name is "Renaut Mégane" and not "Renault Dieselpowered motorised vehicle"

Titles I ,personally, liked so far are:

"Visionary 3d" (Alternative one could say "Visionary Engine" "DarkVision Gamecreator"

"Dark Game Engine" Ultra simplistic but easy to remember and "to the point"

"Reloaded3d" or simply "Reloaded Engine". Confusing to complete newcomers but sounds kewl and is to the point. One of my winners so far.

Quote: "Compared to "First Person Shooter Creator" I preferred the educational-branded name TGC had used in the past: "First Person Game Creator" which is more open-ended"

Thats a legit concern. I believe educational services are potential customers.

"Lee's Sisyphean Task" Priceless

"Dark Renaissance 3D" I still like this...but I admit, it might sound too pretentious to the tech crowd.

What I would throw in, and personally buy, would be "Dark Singularity (3D)". As its an all in one tool and a single person can make a game with it. Altough I admit that it sounds a little menacing.

Titles I liked the least

"New worlds 3d" It has the specific tone of an open source level tool. Something like TGC's 3D world studio. Just no complete game package.

"NocTech" "Dark Matter Tech" Sounds a lot like a teenager trying to come up with a cool name. The only people that can get away with "tech" are crytek...and they became really mediocre and I believe they're broke now (also...why nocturne?)

"Dark Engine Game Awakening" WHOA!

"Dark Engine Game Creator" A game creator does always have an engine. This does not fit. If you'd remove "Dark" it would be "Engine Game Creator". That seems a lot like "Device Computing Machine".

"The Awesome Game 3D engine)"

"Dark Game Architect" This sounds more like a profession or nickname for a person than an engine.

I also get the feeling that some people want to get away from "FPSCreator" because it doesn't sound like serious business

Either way, I belive that it will either remain FPSC-R or become the "Reloaded Engine". Its, of course, up to TGC.

Engine I think is better than 3D as engine indicates more accurately what it is rather than albeit it is sometimes referred to as a game maker. Engine in this context indicates it may be used for many purposes more precisely than 3D which at least to me might suggest a wider modelling capability range of products. Many engines have and do successfully use 3D in the title of course and are often well known names.

Reloaded is fine by me but may of course suggest weaponry and killing violence as a mainstay of the product if that needs to be gotten away from completely and perhaps is not necessary for success.

Again if something is good then it will become known for being so sooner or later by a wide audience whatever the name, however a name can potentially have a bearing on the number of users who wish to use and or be associated with a product for different various reasons and it can in the online world help it making something easier to find for those who don't want to or won't search hard and long to find something that's not immediately apparent and easy returned in searches on the internet.

Some great software is to be found that way but you do have to search long and hard sometimes to find what you want that's just right for you and your needs.

Always difficult the name.

Darkbasic must be a suite that includes a series of programs, as does MS Office, Adobe, etc.

after looking into names of other game dev software pretty much anything goes
Microsoft have "Project Spark"
there is "Game maker"
Unreal have the "UDK"
"Construct 2"
"Stencyl"
Unity"

So my Suggestion would be calling it
Project Paragon
Project Paragon - Game developer

(this was going to be a name of a game that I was making but I feel it fits better as the name of the software)

Bring It On

simplicity engine "dream it, create it, play it" as easy as 1 2 3

slightly different from my blog idea which was "simple engine" though that was less thought of as name and more a statement of what it is to use lol.

FYI, "Dark Engine" was the name of the game engine by Looking Glass Studios for games like System Shock 2. The company went under nearly 15 years ago and so did that engine, but it's still worth noting the name was used before for another engine so there could be some conflict with using it (i.e., there is already a Wikipedia entry for the original "Dark Engine").

PC SPECS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, AMD Phenom X6 1100T 3.60 GHz CPU (Passmark: 5934), NVIDIA Geforce GTX-680 2GB GPU (Passmark: 5712), G.SKILL 16GB DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) RAM
