Hi!

I`ve been asked to translate one of my older Tutorials, so here`s my attempt to write it in english:

So, this Tutorial is about spawning scary creatures (like Ghosts, Monsters, Politicians) as you know them out of games like FEAR or Horrormovies. its about flashing these things in some dark corners, a long dark hallway, behind some furniture or in a mirror (special hint). You can use creepy sounds to set mood or to shock the player.(Like in these crappy vids on Youtube where you should concentrate yourself on something and then they show the face of a ghost wiht an incredible annoying sound)
So heres how it works:

The first thing you need is a good and free to use image of a creature. You should take care that the creature isnt shown as transparent, or you will have parts of the background on your decal later.

Example from a Wallpaperpage:

Now you need to use your eraser and erase the background. If you have problems with this, you can set down your mouse dpi.

Your image should now look like this:

Great! Now make sure that youre texture is in size of 512*512 or 256*256. Most Ghostpictures are dark, so you should add a bit more brightness, beacause FPSC interpretes true black as transparent (R:0B:0G:0 or #00000) and you do not want the body of your ghost being transparent. The background needs to be transparent of curse.
Now save it as one of the used Formats (PNG,JPG,BMP) i suggest PNG.
Watch the size, nobody wants to see giant Ghosts

Now, TEST THE OVERLAY

If everything is fine, you should place it in your level. Set it dynamic and IsImmobile: yes. You can now spawn it.

This works like this:

Place your overlay on the place you want it

Place a trigger zone where the player should spawn the overlay

Choose as a triggerzonemainscript "playerinzoneactivateused.fpi"

Delete the triggerzone soundline (use soundzones for the audio, the triggerzone repeats the sound each time you step into it. You can lay a soundzone over a triggerzone)

Enter the name of the Overlay (p.ex. Ghost) in the "ifused" line.

Choose the Overlay, set it dynamic and immobile

Name: Ghost (or something else)

Spawn at start: No

Spawn after delay: Yes

Spawnlife: The time you want it to spawn.(in seconds)

The Appear and disappear scripts:

appear1/disappear1: Appears/disappears immidiately

appear2/disappear2: Appears(disappears fading in/fading out

You can add the "illuminationent.fx" shader if you want to place it in an unlit area.

You can creat an overlay with signs or any similar programm. If you do not have such software copy your texture in the following directory:

files/entitybank/generic/overlays

Copy p.ex. Rubble.fpe

Open it with MS Editor

Delete the whole line behind "textured" and write the name of your texture in it. Youre done.

I hope this was understandable and useful.

Great tutorial Wolf! I'll be using this for sure. Much easier than using a real character.

Wow, this is great! I'll be using this a lot in my games!
EDIT: Sorry, my FPSC does support black as transparent, just not in the editor.

My blood pack will have 500 blood overlays some day! I hope...

I agree with Nickydude - this should be added to the community guide. Fantastic information, and easy to follow. Now I have more ideas for the game I'm working on...

And Nickydude, can this be stickied until it's added to the guide so it doesn't get lost?

Thanks for the nice Comments, People.

@Tanya: Oh no, FPSC is my Hobby, I don`t want to commercialise it. All of my stuff is usually free.

@Sekoidiootti...guy from Finland [Land where da awesome music is from]: Did you save as PNG? If so, youre background needs to be transparent.

@Nickydude: Yes, it would be an honor to me [Better you check my grammar, though]

If you might be interested, I wrote a lot of other tutorials through last year, here they are:

If youre interested in a translation of one of them, just drop me a line here

I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we'd be interested in all of them. Any chance you can translate all and compile into one large document? I'd be more than happy to turn any word documents into PDF format for you.

...I must concur. Any or all of your tutorials would be immensely popular, Wolf.

I'd be more than happy to aid in translation, and .pdf conversion as well...

@Seko: TGA doesn`t use transparence as far as I know, try jpeg.

@All: Thanks for the friendly comments, guys

@DarthBasicVader: Cool! I`ll keep this in mind.

Well guys, its charming to hear that you would like to read all the tutorials. But, this would be some major homework, some of the tuts are multi page.

Therefore I asked if theres something that is new and not already explained in the Community Guide so I could add it

Well, you can use the one I used to show how it works.

I found it on Wallpaperabyss.

Most Wallpapersides have a dark art corner, you`ll find stuff there.

Another great source is Deviant Art. The Resources and Stock Images Section has a lot of free to use photographs of women in robes which can be altered with a graphic tool. For the other stuff, I would recommendt that you ask permission,

Theres also this picture of the ghost Nun, you`ll find it on any crappy mystery site.

Oh, and if you already check out deviant art, you might also check my crappy Drawings (click on Webpage button)

Hope that helped

Very nice, I'm glad metal Devil bumped this...

I've been thinking if I would make some ghost overlays and post them here, if it's okay with Wolf? Or should I do a new thread for them?

My username is finnish, and it translated to english is: "CrazyIdiot" or something.
