Is it possible to improve performance without sacrificing visuals or do I have to wait for further performance improvements for the devs?

Having trouble with this test level performance.
Averaging only 25fps
and using 16gb RAM

I have turned some settings down, for example the shadow draw distance
most extra lighting are set not to cast shadows
Minimal AI

my system is
i7 7700k
gtx 1080ti
32gm ram

I may try my other system which has a rtx 3080 and i9 to see what happens

Try increasing the draw distance on the grass. ( I know the opposite of what you would think )
The draw distance will be better and it thins the grass out a bit.
I gained a good 10 fps whilst testing.
No one ever really leaves.

@synchromesh
yeah, unfortunately not a compromise i want to make until the terrain textures improve. I'm assuming i just have to wait for performance improvements as this is the bare minimum of a "level" tbh
Even with the grass turned off the performance gain is marginal in this case

When playing the test game, try using the TAB TAB menu (twice) to access the panel on the right side. Go to Shadows and try reducing the shadow size down to 1024 or even 512 to see what that does to your frame rates. You can play with other settings on that side, too, to see if you get a boost.

I also have a GTX 1080 ti and I tend to get 70-100 fps on these levels, with some drops down to the 30s in densely shadowed areas. But that's with the shadows at their defaults.

I found the issue!!
Lots of the collisions had changed to "convex hull" since update - changed them all to box, cylinder or polygon and fps jumped up to 45-60 and all lag and stuttering disappeared

Now I really don't know, sorted collisions and got around 60fps across the whole map, saved and exited.
Now I restarted and it's dropped to 30fps

Convex Hull messed up my dungeons had to set to polygon the physics just didnt work.

I get the issues in wooded areas but no objects about so mine will be the tree system in close proximity as in dips with trees everywhere

Hoping soon it will be better

I've had that happen a few times on a map of mine. Was getting a consistent 100fps, then all of a sudden, 50fps on a restart. But a restart or two later and it sorts itself out. So, did you try starting again just to see if it goes back?

I believe this has been reported on GitHub and is being looked into.

thanks so much for the replies guys
I think i am going to leave GG Max for a few months, other than some tests here and there
I am happy with the progress and I am happy with the graphics and aesthetic I am able to achieve with it, i will just wait till it matures enough to start making my game.

Unfortunately pine trees kill performance - they are your main issue.

Here is a tutorial: LINK

Its written for an older version of game guru classic, but I think its relevant again.

Your problem is just the amount of trees and also the draw distance as the engine is barely optimized.

I'm inclined to concur. Its early for this software and I think it will be months, if not years before we can start to develop fully fledged projects in it.

Same - the other trees look ok - but pines are my favorites as well by far

Best also to use low settings for trees/grass.
Grass: set grass density to 50 at max (I use 25) and keep draw distance low - 1000 max
- And don't let it use all the different grasses. I tend to use 2 or 3, and paint others in select areas
Trees: set density to 25-30, and 10-60 for height

But if you load the same map with rainforest trees for example (and use same settings like above example)
- you will almost double you FPS
- and prevent much of the Player Movement issues (not completely but a huge difference)
