Hello, dear community! Sorry for the noob question - there may be a program for easy changing textures of characters (like zombies, soldiers) ? Manually it's not very nice is obtained looks as a result. Maybe not for .x GG but in general models like fbx, 3ds.
Google disappointed me or perhaps I entered the wrong request.. or it is not possible at all and need to work in 3D-modelling programm like Blender ?

3d painting software like Substance Painter or 3d Coat (which is also a sculpting tool) may be what you're looking for. There are free alternatives, I think, some of which are mentioned in the Third Party Tools section of the forum.

Howdy!

Textures are not at all related to .x or .fbx. Those are the mesh files.
You can easily edit and convert textures in photoshop, paint.net,gimp, irfan view or my favorite: paint shop.

Again, textures are completely independent from any 3d information here.

Thanks for answers!

@Gtox : I'll look at the programs you mentioned.

@Wolf : Yes, I already manually edited the textures in photo-programms, like PhotoFiltre or PaintNET.
Sometimes it looks terrible, when I look at the model, since the texture is stretched in 3D, and in the png or dds file it is flat.
I just want to see in real time what I'm doing and how the model looks as a result of changes.

This is what 3D painting apps do. You import the mesh, and then paint directly on to it. 2D programs, like GIMP and Photoshop, are useful if you want to create textures from photos, and they no doubt have other advantages that elude me right now. I usually use both 3D and 2D programs when doing textures.

Allegorithmic Substance Painter would be great for what you want as you can see what the object looks like as you change the texture, you don't even have to buy the software fully, you can just rent it for a month and do a few models at once or buy it over time (this is what I am doing, I wouldn't use anything else). The only thing is you would have to change the object from the type in GG to *.fbx,*.obj, *.dae or *.ply as this is what SP uses, but that is fine since there is a great site that can change the type of just about anything.

Online 3D Converter:
http://www.greentoken.de/onlineconv/

This is a great site I have used it many times and never had a problem with the models it produces.

After you are happy with the new texture of your model you then just export the Texture files out and convert them to *.dds, this is easy enough and there are many free programs that will do it too like Easy2Convert JPG to DDS (Another program I use all the time with great results)

Hope this helps

Yup, Substance Painter does import .X files, but i would recommend OBJ or FBX, the SP .X importer can be a little funny and has a known bug where for random unknown reasons some polygons on a .X will be un-paintable, odd thing with it is you can keep re-importing the model and it will be different polygons each time and sometimes it will fix itself, so it can't be the model causing it.

@Gtox and @Belidos, thanks for that info I had forgotten that Substance Painter could do this but the new version doesn't seem to have the .x import, it must be because of what Belidos said. They must have taken it out to try and fix it.

I decided to pay monthly so that I get the latest versions. It is only about £19.99 a month and you also have access to Substance Source, which gives you 50 new textures per month, I have found it very useful.

@TazMan - are you using SP 2018? I'm using SP2, which can import .x models, but I don't know about SP 2018 (I'm not thrilled about the new version every year thing).

@Gtox - No I am using 2017.4.2, the newest one wont run on my machine, I have sent a report but have not received anything back yet.

I quite like getting regular updates to the software.
