Virtual Reality / Summary of VR status for GG

OK, I'm new to VR, but jazzed to get started. I've done a little research and the unit I like is the OSVR DK2. That said, I have a lot to learn about VR and how it relates to GG.

I'm hoping that someone could write a little summary on where VR for GG is today? What works, and what does not? Any suggestions for reading about VR videos to watch, etc., would be appreciated.

Sorry to say, man, VR hasn't been implemented yet in GG. I sure hope it will be in the next year, as it was promised from the get go. It was in Reloaded for one or two betas, then it was gone. Lee is currently updating the entire engine to DX11 right now (I'm sure you noticed), so everything's on hold 'til that gets completed. Even then, it's at the bottom (or near) of the feature vote list. A lot has happened in the two years you've been away. Complete C++ rewrite of the engine, EBE, terrain textures (I still don't get that), and the opening up of Lua control, which I saw you noticed in another post. Anyway, it's coming along. As good as he is, he's only one man, lol. I have the OR DK1 and the CV1 but not the DK2. DK1 is pretty much a brick although it will run in UE4 v 8.1 and earlier, but nowhere else for me. It's okay, since I have the CV1. I'm really looking forward to getting to use it in GG!

AGK has VR support for the retail versions of the rift and the vive (not sure if the development versions work) and promises that phone VR support will come soon, so i guess if sales go well then we may see it pushed up the list on GG? (though VR is still a very limited market).

otherwise if you have the extra money you can get the GGloader app and AGK (and the VR DLC of course) to get started... a bit costly but you still have a very small game market for VR so now is a great time to make money there.

Long time no talk to. Hope all is well. I'm sure I'll have plenty of scripting questions.

While games will be a big thing for VR, I'm also interested in the 360 video aspects of the technology. Think about walking through the Roman Ruins, or up inside the Great Pyramid in 3D. Also, I've given up on game making. I plan to use GG as an exploration platform. Visit a model of a Frank Lloyd Wright home and surrounding country side. I'm working on a model of a art gallery, where you walk through and view priceless paintings without flying to France (even though going to France would be fun).

Does GG Loader work in AGK or AGK2? I have AGK but not AGK2. (I think, lol)

EDIT: Nevermind, it is AGK2

I just bought GG Loader and AGK VR a little while ago. GG Loader is still converting my GG library. Looking forward to trying it out! I am not a programmer by any means, but I understand some basics. Of course, it won't work on my laptop in VR, but it definitely will on my desktop. Thanks for the info, smallg!



Update: It is STILL converting assets, lol. It's still on the .dds conversions. I hope stage 3 and 4 go much faster!


Another update: Realizing that this would really only work on the desktop, I figured I'd better get this process going on that if I wanted to try it by the end of the weekend. I forgot that I couldn't be on Steam simultaneously on two machines, so when I signed on, the conversion stopped on the laptop, lol. Oh well, I re-learned something today.
