Looks like a nice smooth print! I'm working on a Christmas ornament right now, but when I'm done, I think I might try printing a few GG stock assets just for kicks, lol.

My Christmas ornament sadly, was a failure. I decided to print it with wood filament, which I had never printed with before. I tried this the night before Christmas Eve. It was an over 10-hour print. The rafts and supports became so integrated in the rest of the print that cleanup in time for Christmas would have been impossible! I realized that it melts at such a lower temperature than ABS or even PLA was the likely cause. Oh well, maybe next year. I ordered some water soluble filament to be used for rafts and supports from now on. That should make my print more feasible! I think I may start trying to print some GG assets as my next little project.

I just got the water soluble filament today! I also have a reel of Pet G (clear) but haven't printed with it yet. Am looking forward to trying both.

Very keen to hear how you guys go with the soluble filiment as I have read can be a pain to use, I myself have the eBay CTC dual head printer but have yet to do much with it.

So far, no usable results with it. Have only tried a couple times. The raft doesn't stick to the bed so the nozzle just drags it along. I've tried with both the bed hot or cool, same result. Hairspray or glue stick will be used on my next try.

Printed a couple of the Masked Soldiers the other day, at two different scales. Trying to paint one (yes, I know, I suck at painting), realizing that acrylics just seem to amplify the layering of 3D printers. Enamels cover it up pretty well. I ordered some putty to smooth out the models that is being shipped from Japan so it may take a few weeks. Smooth-on also makes a product for that purpose but it costs a bit more. Will buy as a last resort.

EDIT: For anyone who is curious, the AI does transfer to the printed model!

If anyone questions the value of GG, for $20 or less, you also get 5GB-the non-model parts of assets (still a lot) that can be printed. Any application that can import Direct x can export .obj (at least, I have NEVER run across one that can't).

I tried printing the lander from the sci-fi pack but when I scaled it down so it would fit in my printer, the legs were too thin to get a good print. I might alter that model and make them a little thicker and try again. I haven't put a model together or painted anything since I was a kid, so my paint jobs will be that of an untalented 8 or 9 yr old, lol. After I printed the soldier, I just had to try painting it, though, so I ordered a ton of paints online. Maybe I'll get better with time!

I use the sheets too. The soluble filament just doesn't stick to it. I haven't tried again yet. Right now I am printing a colonial viper from Battlestar Gallactica TOS. I kinda got into a spacecraft mood when I tried the lander! It would have been a good time to try hairspray. That's what I used on my first printer (I had a glass bed on that one). It worked pretty well.

I finally got the PVA (soluble filament) to stick to the bed! 170 degrees C extruder and 70 degree bed, along with a coat of hairspray on the bed for good measure. The unfortunate part is that the ABS wouldn't stick to the PVA! I think I'll just stick with breaking off the rafts and supports.

Jerry, just curious if you have tried giving your soldier models an Acetone vapour bath yet? That would really smooth off the model and I think it might make it easier to paint.

I haven't tried that on anything, yet. I bought a can of acetone a long time ago for just that purpose, forgot I had it, lol! I just haven't really printed anything that I really cared about painting. Thanks for reminding me! Perhaps I will try that today after I run some errands.

Colonial Viper, circa 1978! Third time's a charm! After abandoning (temporarily) attempts at using the water soluble filament, and realizing that printing the ship in a vertical orientation was the best way to go, I finally have it! I'm hoping all that garbage plastic on the sides of the engines is just from supports. I won't really know until I take some tweezers and dental picks to it. Raining outside today and for the next 4, so the acetone vapor bath may have to wait. I want to be as far from the house as I can when I try that, so garage and patio are out of the question! Funny, I live in a desert where it probably rains fewer than 20 days out of the year (typically; and cloudy only a few more). I take a week and a half off from work just to do these kinds of things along with some yard work, and it has only been clear out 1 day!

EDIT: After these few models, I'm curious to know if the creators of these models would appreciate (or even care) that their models, in the physical world, are actually balanced enough to stand on their own? Just an observation.

Me, too! Going to print the original Galactica today. Won't be to the same scale as the Viper, though, that would take up my living room! The Galactica is modelled in sections, though, so I might be able to get a decent sized model. The Viper took about 5 1/2 hours to print. These are Poser quality models so there is a LOT of detail in them. If time allows, I might print a Cylon Raider as well!

Well, it looks like this little project will be on hold for a bit, I lost my X-axis. I hope it's just the cable, they aren't very well made. It looks like it will be a pain to re route through the printer chassis. Oh, well, lol!

I don't think I can legally! I know you own Game Guru, but TGC might frown on that anyway. Perhaps a Mod could chime in here on that? All I did was convert him to .obj (I used Ultimate Unwrap), imported him into Blender, scaled him, then exported as .obj again. Blender can also export .STL files if that's what your printer software requires. I use Makerbot most of the time. I also have Simplify3D, which, in spite of it's name, doesn't really simplify anything, lol. It does, however, give a lot more control over parameters than Makerbot.

Back in business! Well, almost. It WAS the cable, it was odd, I tested all four lines for continuity and they passed, so I replaced the stepper driver board and had the same issue. I ran a temp replacement cable (without all the routing) and the problem is now gone. After I print the Cylon Raider (much smaller print than the Galactica), I will put it all back together proper. Luckily the printer shipped with some spare parts! Now I gotta source some replacements because that cable failed with less than 100 hours on the machine.

Good news, glad you got it sorted.i had simular problems with mine.when I separated the cables and just let them hang it worked ok.

Put model of masked soldier through simplify 3D and it came out on the preview with loads of holes.very overrated that software,I think it works so fast that it dosent slice properly.

Yeah, my second attempt at the Viper I printed with S3D. It missed half the cockpit's canopy (big hole), among other things. I then turned around and used the Makerbot software with the same model file and it turned out great (after cleaning it up, of course, still not done with that yet, lol. There are so many variables in S3D, though, and I don't know what they're all for, exactly. I watched only one of their intro videos so I'm flying blind with that. So many people swear by it, though, that's why I bought it! I'm a sucker in that regard!

That's a very cool 3d print, it's amazing what can be done with some cheap printers nowadays. My friend's son is interested in building houses with a giant printer... A curious dream that I wouldn't be so surprised to see fulfilled by an entrepreneur firm in a near future. ^^

Look up 3D printed house, the Chinese are already doing it, building full 2 story lots in very little time, meaning 1-3 months

Yeah just need to get a fan and work out how to power it now, might just use a USB port to power it on 5v and see how it goes.

No printing at the moment, my spool holder fell down and broke whilest printing which locked up the spool mid print, not sure how long it was like that so hopefully no other damage to the spool feed but when I get time to set it all back I will see

Got my fan and switch of eBay,just use the 14v outlet on the power pack to power your fan.you can use a switch or just have it on when you turn you printer on.
