I never made a spaceship before so I decided to see how it went. I would like to animate this thing so when you press a button or something like that it would fly in from the sky and open up. Then when you get inside it you hit E and the door would close and it would carry you up into the air where you can end your level. I'd also have to make a separate one for a beginning of the level as well. Maybe I can pull it off

Update: I hate spaceships! This model has been a pain. For some reason I haven't figured out yet, because it has an animated door setting the collision to one doesn't work for allowing you to enter the back. Another little snag in the line is figuring out the proper way to rig this. Making the door open and close is simple but the root joint I attach to the entire model won't lift the door without screwing up the bones that opened the door. I'm sure they're both simple fixes , I just need to read up on it some more. Anyway, here's a little demo. This one might get put aside for little bit before I accidentally destroy it

I've been taking the last couple days to learn a few new programs. I found a nice one called sculptris that makes it pretty easy to make creatures among other things. The polygon count is really high so you have to run your models through other programs to reduce the triangles. It took about an hour or so to make this little test guy, I got him down to 4000 polygons:

so, I've been trying to figure out the best way to rig this model up. I'd tried maximo which works really well but the only thing I can get it to import into his blender because it's a fbx. It seems like I have to finely stop avoiding it and learn Blender or master the rigging techniques of milkshape

I figured out human rigging for the most part, still need some adjustments. Here's my progress so far, he has some tearing and stretching that needs fixed. If I can get everything to work smoothly with this guy I might switch gears and start doing characters. I would like to do some silent hill type creatures. now, back to work!

Here's a different model I was doing on the side. Sort of a grunge SCI Fi type computer station. It's using temporary textures for now but it will look basically the same when it's done, just cleaned up

The last week has been kind of a turd so I haven't put up anything new. I got pretty sick and been out of the loop. I will have some new stuff up here sometime soon. Harrywever was kind enough to help me fix my creature model so as soon as I do some adjustments I will put him on here and the free models and media page. It's my practice model so it's not the best(a little crusty) but maybe someone will find some use for it .
I also have some other stuff in the works so as soon as I get some motivation going I will be back on track

Im surprised its animating as well as it is. Taking a sculpted model straight from a sculpting app is never really a good idea. as limbs dont bend right etc. You normally make a low poly from the high poly by either box modeling around it or using other techniques. The high poly is used for your tangent space normal map. What you can do in blender though which works great. Is take a sculpted mesh and use cut through to add those join areas. Good try for your first animated character though. I wish some one would make a tutorial on creating and importing custom characters from blender into GG without using mender etc. HInt, Hint.

Thanks jackalhead, I could have done him a lot better but I rushed through the whole process to see if I could even get it to work. There was some extra stretching in spots I wasn't really happy with. It could have been my rigging though, it was my first try. I thought about doing a tutorial many times, I just hate hearing the sound of my own voice so it takes forever to get the video done =) I think I need to take another crack at characters and get it down before I try to teach someone else. I will look into what you talking about with blender. I spent a day or two with the program to try to force myself to learn it. It has lots of features I really like it's just more of a pain to use in my other programs

I've been kind of getting into this SCI Fi theme, probably because I've been playing dead space lately(a very good series if you haven't tried it) . I decided to do a different style of the hyepersleep chamber and this is what I came up with. I need to turn the glass transparent and fix a little hitch or two but it's pretty much done And animated

Good looking models mate.

I have also been working on a 'Hypersleep Chamber', (although, I called mine a stasis chamber - I prefer your name!).

I was going to use mine as a save point in game. What a coincidence!

Cheers

Jay.

thanks!I was actually going to call it stasis chamber! I just ended up going with hyper sleep(I think that's what they were called in aliens, I could be wrong, it's been awhile. Although I'd seen those movies a million times growing up, I should know). That would be cool to use it for a save point or if you could script it to start out inside it and have the player get out to start the level. Nice looking models yourself, I've seen quite a few in the store. I'd like to see your stasis chamber/hyper sleep chamber when you get it done.

Here's a animated mailbox I've been messing around with. I figured I would make a couple different variations of textures and then put it in a pack. I've been trying to mess around with different programs to learn texture painting(like mari and substance painter) and other things so I haven't been getting much done lately. For anybody who's interested, Mari indie 3.0 is now 12 bucks on steam Which seems like a pretty good deal for what it does. Edit:Maybe not such a good deal

Different styles for different fences and yards

hmmm... I guess I should have read down the page . Good thing I'd tried out there noncommercial version first. well, I guess I won't be buying that. Somehow it doesn't seem like such a good deal now
I really like how sculptris texture paints but it's very picky about the model you can import. You wouldn't know by chance how to fix too many vertex's to one edge would you? That's the error I keep getting with sculptris

There's not much new going on with modeling. With the store doing a changeover I've been waiting for that to get settled. plus, nothing seems to be getting approved at the moment anyway. In the meantime here's a free ivy hanging to make stuff look overgrown.

Here's another freebie for you guys, a liquor store. With the new update there's plenty of stuff to pile around it . I can't remember where I got the store logo(I dug it out of one of my old texture folders) so it might be a real store. If you're going to use this for something you're selling you might want to customize the store name. Then again, it might be fine .

well, I finally found a reason to get in to blender . The texture painting is pretty awesome. I used my new boat to do some practicing and I really like the result . I was even able to add some rust build up on the bottom rather easily to give it more worn in look. The only problem I seem to be getting is even at 2048x2048 the textures seen low resolution. I was using the smart unwrapper but maybe there's a better way so it doesn't scatter the model all over the place as much and shrink the size of the textures. I guess I will have to do some research

I decided to do a little more interactive house stuff so here's what's going on now. A running washing machine . The clothes will spin with sound as long as it doesn't turn out looking goofy. This isnt the final texture but it's pretty close. I recently decided to play fear 2 again and I like their idea of the severed head spinning around in the washer which kind of gave me the idea . I guess if the clothes don't work out I could try body parts =)

Here it is working, using a still image for the clothes it looks best stuck in spin cycle purgatory. I guess if i reworded some labels it could double as a dryer.I would like to do some cooler stuff with it(like have it turn on and off) but I'm not very good with lua.I've also noticed models on here that have the animations on the model (like a animated screens )that would be neat for the washer display but I'm not sure how they're accomplishing that

Yeah, it's just pareidolia, your mind is stimulated to see in patterns something that isn't really there. It's the same as when you look at clouds and the shapes remind you of bunny rabbits. It's actually part of our ancient hunter prey instincts, when we glance at something quickly the brain quickly scans for familiar shapes so that we don't have to focus on everything we're looking at, that way we can react quicker to threats. It's the same here, the piece of clothing has a similar overall shape to a baby when you look at it at a certain angle, once your mind focuses on that you will always see that shape when looking at that object.

I really do need to get back to the characters. I made another alien that I was planning on doing right I just haven't got around to finishing him. The big problem I have with characters is I'm not very good with lua so to get them to work properly is kind of a pain. That's mainly the reason my characters got put on the back burner. Since you mentioned it and I'm not in the middle of anything right now I might give it another go And see how things turn out.
