Have you guys heard about Amazon's game engine called Lumberyard?

http://kotaku.com/amazon-releases-its-own-game-engine-for-free-1757995787?utm_campaign=Socialflow_Kotaku_Facebook&utm_source=Kotaku_Facebook&utm_medium=Socialflow

I wonder if GG will in the future have the ability to integrate things like Twitch into the actual core.

I've been checking it out tonight, looks to good to be true. Why are people going pay subs for CryEngine when you can have Lumberyard for free?

Just to add it's still not as good as GG

50 to 70 million to license crytechs technology for this.... Huh! I wonder if that was such a wise investment.

Lumberyard is a funny name though! Might give it a look... perhaps good to showcase 3D models in.

It will probably end up with quite heavy micro-transactions, for a start the multiplayer system will probably use amazons servers and they will probably charge to host.

Amazon often does things at a loss just to get their foot in the door and to try things out. So far, it's been a pretty successful strategy! (Of course, the phone thing didn't work out)

I read through all the service terms and you can't sell games you make with it through steam or any other "alternate" online service and you have to register any game made with amazon before it can be sold and they get to use said game for their marketing even if you make physical copies to sell directly.
So no fee for the program itself but they're looking to make considerable money from the cut they'll get from games sold as the distributor through amazon web services, the terms even bring up videos so if you go Rooster Teeth with it you can only sell the videos through amazon and not Hulu or any other competitor. It's a pretty good move for them and I'll be getting the program to play with but that doesn't affect any future plans to make stuff with GameGuru which I could sell on steam AND amazon.

On a similar note, Crytek just released CryEngine V, and at the same time removed their subscription service and put a "pay what you want" system in place. effectively it's free now.

and while on the subject of CryEngine and pay what you want, humblebundle.com have a huge CryEngine resources bundle at the moment, tons of assets for whatever you want to pay them.

About the engine:
Tried it and its... yet another one of these...
If you have tried a couple engines in the past decade you know what I mean. Its surely powerful. I have set up a few meshes and ...not for me. Too time consuming, too slick...it really feels like something developed by people who call themselves "crytek".
Take my worthless and biased review for what its worth

It's definitely not a small company piece of software.

Crytek are AAA developers, the name comes from their very famous games (which were made with this engine) Crysis, and FarCry, hence the company name CryTek and the software's name CryEngine. It's also been used to create some very well known games, such as Aion, ArcheAge, WarFace, Star Citizen, and many more.

It's a professional AAA engine, it's just like any other professional software, it has a huge learning curve.

Hey! I know I own most of their games and love the art in Ryse (sadly, that game didn't do too well). The first crysis is a great game in my book.
I just always felt that "crytek" sounds a lot like a teenagers bedroom development company hence my joke. This might be because after the impact of crysis in 2008, plenty kids have shown up on forums with names sounding similar

i have crytek and lumberyard installed but i didn't really use it much yet.
i would like to know from you: is it possible to build a standalone game with crytek OR lumberyard? to have a standalone game i can pass to other people to play without owning the engine or something like this. i would really like to know. with cryengine i already built a nice island with palms within an hour.

Considering the restrictions on Lumberyard I would probably go cryengine if I were to choose, though from what wolf commented I get the impression it may be akin to Unreal Development Kit (hate that thing with a passion). Can't be nearly as bad as that though if you had an island out in an hour. Yes one can build standalone game with cryengine.

Cry V being "free" though I will probably eventually add it to my collection of software on general principal despite the high chances of never doing anything with it.

If you're going to get CryEngine anyway, you might as well head over to humblebundle.com and buy their current crytek resource bundle, tons of models, scripts and such for however much you want to pay for them, you could pay as little as $1 if you want.

You can also get the campfire asset pack free form humble just by signing up to their newsletter.
