Do the image squares need to be 1024 x 1024 or can that be doubled for better resolution? Or would doubling the resolution slow down the engine?

They can be 2048 x 2048, but will take more time to load. After that it is not to bad unless you really pack out a level.

I'm also curious about the image that goes on the bottom under the terrain, does that have to be seamless with the sides, or could I put a solid color (or even a smiley face)?

It is normally blended into the sides, but you can put what ever you want in any of the 6 places.

That skybank was for the fantasy map ... I think its supposed to be exaggerated.
Some kind of magical forest environment ..

I think it says in the change log. Text file. I will have to check.

Edit:
Looked at the change log and it is credited to this person. MR LOGAN

That was the intent for that skybox.

Yes the forest is supposed to be huge because you are supposed to be in a fantasy forest with enormous trees and mushrooms. It's not supposed to look normal or realistic. If you've ever played Everquest 2, think of the Greater Faydark zone.

The forest is supposed to be the way it is, I gave that skybox to Lee for his fantasy level and handed over distribution rights to TGC.. It wasn't specifically designed for GG and is supposed to be used in a smaller level design, it is as stated a Fantasy Forest but it still matched better than the skybox he was using

I don't think I have the original files for this (it's a good few years old now) but might think about creating a similar one for GG, all the same I would need to consider whether this was to be free or not. I got a living to earn.

Moved to the media boards, this is not suitable for product chat as it directly relates to media creation.

In my experience 1024 x 1024 is enough,.....if I double that to 2048 x 2048, I see no visible difference
in game,.....maybe later it may make a difference, but for now 1024 x 1024 is fine.

As for Rolfy's fantasy skybox,.......it is supposed to be that way, because it's "fantasy", but I'm sure
he will make a more "realistic" forest skybox soon.
