No not yet, other formats are going to be added for import. Right now it is X, 3ds, or DBO files.

I wasn't even aware it was supposed to be able to accept .3ds. Anyway, it's easy enough to convert to Directx, so I wouldn't even bother. The engine will convert to .dbo automatically, which apparently is more efficient. (I know the file size is much smaller, anyway) I think that is where the limitations on polygon/vertex count come into play, is when the .dbo format comes in.

I noticed awhile ago the addition of 3ds files again, even after they removed the feature before that as redundant (old FPSC code). I would convert whatever file you have to .x personally. I also noticed support for Sketchup models directly? Not tried it in quite some time, but I found Sketchup really good for buildings, being super easy to use and also texture with, no UV mapping needed. The main issue was it never worked in any game engine I tried Sketchup support out the box would make it a lot easier to knock up some buildings and such than in Blender.

Vertex limit per object is 65000 and a bit. after that it truncates the model in places, causing bad collision and missing pieces.
