Question about the zombies that are being worked on, they are not going to be like the soldiers and you can only have a few on the map before frames drop dramatically are they? to make a game with zombies you need to have alot 6-10 zombies is going to be no fun at all!. we should be able to have at least 75 zombies on a map at any given time and have them respawn and not have any or much frame drop. At least that is how I would like it to be. Can't speak for everyone else. Hopefully if needed it gets delayed longer to be able to produce more zombies per map without having to ruin the visual quality of the zombies. (Haven't seen them recently, what do they look like? has there been any new images release?)

Instead of having 75 all at one time a script could be made to spawn new zombies in as you kill the so say there are 20-40 in the map at one time the script could spawn more as you kill them keeping performance up.

Good idea, I just hope they fix it to make sure you can have alot of zombies, like you said 20-40 and a script with them

In the latest beta that is being tested at the moment the AI speed is much improved I can have 50+ with hardly any frame drop (maybe 20 FPS) from a map without any AI. I haven't tried more than that.

I am sure even more optimization can be done to make it even quicker.

Would be nice to create an urban scene with 50-100 (or more, even!) zombies staggering down the streets in pursuit, a la "The Walking Dead".

Not when you look at other zombie games out there. 100 is quite moderate compared to some.

Oh I mean just in relation to how Reloaded works at present, I don't see it running well.

Now if only we could have THIS many zombies :p

What he said in the video is amazing at around 2:00 were if he leaves a cell the AI locations save and when you come back to the area they reload. I will present this idea to lee.

You can buy far superior engines to that.

How about a game with only a few zombies per level but a really good atmosphere and story. Like those horrorgames people actually remember.

Yea that's true and i probs already own it like unity and Unreal Engine 4 but you need to know your coding and as i only know some its not enough to take any game and make it a finished one

As much as i don't mind the zombie craze that has taken over the gaming genres lately, in the past couple years, I don't actually find the actual game play as fore-filling. The hack and slash part about it is a bit boring over time and repetitive. So dealing with hordes after hordes of zombies I tend to literally get tired.

What I'd love to see in the zombie genre is other elements, other types of factions going on at the same time. With a consistent developing story through-out. So while 100 zombies would be impressive, you have to ask yourself how fun it would be over time? I put in a lot of money into zombie games because I do love zombie movies... but I do get bored of them very easily after a while. They are all pretty much the same.

I think Wolf's suggestion is best. Like for instance "The Last of Us"; Which technically isn't a zombie game. Its a great way of limiting your encounters but still makes the game enjoyable and scary without completely overwhelming the player to the point of a forced hack and slash.

Now do we want to have the ability of 100 enemies on our map?... I sure do... but never all at once... not even by a quarter the amount lol

No Reloaded would struggle a bit with 100, but to expect it in games these days is fairly common, some games have thousands of em! Agreed the games themselves don't look so great, but that wasn't the question. Obviously, you can probably make do with a lot less at any one time, particularly indoors scenes. But as indoor scenes are pretty much rubbish at the minute, that is still something we are waiting for.

Does anyone else think that the running zombies in this game (video above) are very, very similar to Dead Islands?

You don't need that many zombies to create tension. If anything you're better off having fewer zombies and making them more difficult to kill. ZombiU on the Wii U does this perfectly, there hasn't been a more tense and stressful zombie game released in donkey's years. It's right up there with the original Resident Evil game.

In beta 1.007, I could put over 200 combat soldiers in an open scene (just a couple trees and a river) before my frame rate dropped below 45 fps. They have weapons, and I would assume that taxes the AI pretty heavily vs. unarmed zombies. If performance has gone back up to at least that level, I don't see why 100 unarmed zombies would be out of the question. Old pic, 150 + soldiers:

Eeek! After V1.009, remind me to show you how to have your Zombies start with Spawn At Start=No, with a little script to make them appear when you get close Trust me, most games not designed with hundreds of zombies in mind rarely put them all in the same room! I dare say with a little multi-core magic and some instancing tricks I've recently discovered for DirectX 9, it can be done, but a better question is do you really want to be attacked by 100 zombies at once - ouch!!

Dead Rising was frustrating enough and that was like what 15 at a time? Wii version.

I've never played Dead Rising, but what I think what would be cool, in a zombie themed game is what I mentioned further up regarding "The Walking Dead". Using hordes of zombies to direct the player in specific directions. I don't know if you've ever seen the show, but the tank scene and the events of that episode (first or second in the series, I don't remember, I binge watch! That's what Google is for) probably best describe the scenario I'm talking about. Kill a few closest to you, but get the hell away from them! I think it would be an excellent way to deliver some sort of linearity/direction to an otherwise "open" world.

EDIT: Thanks, Conjured Entertainment for showing me that I misspelled "hordes" originally, it's corrected now, but obviously not in any quotes from me. In my own defense, I had a few beers in me! Stuff like that really bothers me for some reason (OCD?)! Homonyms do get past the spell checker, though, unfortunately.

I'm a pretty big fan of the show but I do find a lot of zombie games that have hoards in them a bit frustrating at times. I find even Dead Island to be a bit too hard at times once your overwhelmed. It takes the fun out of actually killing them when your just floated with zombies from all directions.

I get a bit of a jist of the idea your mentioning. Where a wave of zombies appear directing you away from them not actually to engage them. I think to do that you would need to create a single object of zombies and if the player happens to touch them or get to close you would have him die or load a cinematic death.

The best zombie game ever released, ZombiU for the Wii U, has at most 3 or 4 zombies at once. But even a single zombie can kill you in seconds if you're not careful. This game is hands down the most tense and stressful zombie game I've ever played.

And as you can see from my avatar it also allows you to zombiefy yourself lol

Yeah, a horde would be cool.
IF you had a death trap set in case they advance on the horde THEN they would quickly learn to run from it.
That way, the horde could be an illusion of the quantity, since the player would never get close to it.

Silly question To have the ability would be great, it increases game options, despite people saying that you don't need so many. I agree, generally you probably don't. But in some cases it could be a useful tool and very atmospheric. You could have scary scenes in a building with a low amount of zombies, but then when you finally get outside and see the streets full of them would be a great showpiece.

Perhaps there are other things needed to be added first. Nice to have the power under the hood of course

I really like the idea of a hoard of zombies directing or moving the player in a desired direction. Just the "HOLY CRAP" factor would be awesome. It seems that we should be able to "fake" the hoard using some real zombies and some sprites or likewise behind them. Then hoards could be reused.

If my post seems rude or stupid, don't be offended. It's just a failed attempt at humor.

Both excellent workarounds if I were to attempt something like this, because the

is exactly what I have in mind!
