Any chance of a flamethrower? Think this would make a great weapon for a future build.

There was talks about this many months ago when the talks about the integration of a particle system was also mentioned. So I can easily see this coming sometime in the future. I do wonder if we'll be able to have enemies burst in flames. That would be a huge step beyond FPSCx9.

We will certainly be adding flamethrowers at some point. Code wise it's not a major undertaking, but we are currently focusing on performance and visuals once more.

You could spawn a charred corpse in place of the character you just killed instead of altering it's texture. (I have no idea how big of a difference that would make on resources, though.) Lua allows for that already, in fact, you could add several variations and use them randomly (or not randomly, of course)

MAME Cab PC: i7 4770@3.4Ghz (passmark 9945), 12GB RAM, Win 8.1/64, GeForce GTX645 (passmark 1898); Shiny new laptop: i7 4800MQ@2.7Ghz (passmark 8586), 16GB RAM, Win 8.1/64, GeForce GTX870M (passmark 3598); Old laptop: i5@2.3Ghz, 8GB RAM, Win 7/64, Intel 3000 graphics

Quite true. This is the same technique I had planned to use for my comp demo, but didn't have enough time.
