Despite reading all the horror stories regarding importing characters, I decided to to try and create an animated elephant. After much wailing, gnashing of teeth and many exploding vertices, I managed to get it into FPSCR looking roughly as it should. However, when I increased the shadows, I noticed all these patches showing up. This only happens with character_basic shader and not the entity_basic shader. The character shader also flips the model 180 degrees, which I had to compensate for, which I think is why tusks are now spiralled. Any help with fixing the shadows will be much appreciated (the spiral tusks are easily fixable, I think).

Edit: I'm trying to attach an image

For what it's worth, I applied a simple pink texture to the model, with the same results. I also downloaded Unity and tested it there, and it looks fine, so it seems as though the problem lies between the character shader and the model.

I also just noticed this same thing with an old classic FPSC model that I made mods to. I wish I knew how to fix it.

System Specs: OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1, CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 945, 3.0Ghz, RAM - 8Gb DDR3, GFX Card - 2048MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 640, FPSC-R Version - Beta 1.0071

It actually looks like the verts need welding, detached verts are often caused by importing a .x model then re-exporting, some models simply come like that whatever the format. If vertices are detached the faces lose smoothing.

In vertex mode select all and weld at a low threshold, you can then apply some extra smoothing and it should fix this.

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum...

Nope, not the verts.
