You may or may not have seen my posts about this on my Commando trailer. I have been working on a program to add an intro to Reloaded games. It's basic at the moment but could probably include a few extra settings to set your texture size etc from in the menu system I haven't tried that part yet, but am confident it will work.

Progress so far.

Added config file to edit in order to change the graphics, video sounds to your own.

Added escape key to video

Have a very basic option menu.

Start

Controls( view only)

Exit

To do.

I am considering an editor to place your graphics where you want, possibly add in some movement for it also. But that is not started yet. Also to maybe make the text expand or change color when you hover the mouse over.

At the moment it sometimes fails to execute the game. I am unsure if I can get that more solid, my attempts so far have been varied with no clear answer. I thought a bit of a pause would help, but it seems not. Or at least not all the time..

Question is would you want to try this version? It involves some file copying and such still and is by no means automatic, but it should work.

Version 1.1 Now Available with a basic editor to fine tune your creations! If it ever uploads lol. I always forget to click upload file since the new system!

I'll disentangle it from my game and zip it up then. You will need to have 2 videos for it at present, I'd include mine but they make the download rather big. One for the intro and one for the menu itself. You could always make a short video with a simple picture for the menu for now, making a looped video scene can be finicky, at least it was with Movie maker. Or test with a dreamscene vid, although you wouldn't be able to use one in a released game I imagine. I use wmv to be sure DB would play it, avi works as well, but videos can be a pain in this regard. Anyway, I'm sure you will sort out some vids for it.

I'll get it zipped up and posted shortly.

Here it is. Hopefully you can unpack rar files. If not I\'ll zip it.

It has instructions and I think it is fairly easy to use. Let me know how it goes for you! I know a menu is a way off as yet (well I imagine it is) so this can help us play about in the meantime!

I\'ll try to add more functionality into the menu and a editor system too so you can customize the menu more. If, and when I can

Edit - Oh, I ended up doing 2 dummy vids so you should be able to test straight away! Glutton as I am for punishment, lol. Save you guys the annoyance of having to make vids to see you game start with it

I\'m sure you will find it easy to test Allmightyhood. I hope it is easy anyway!

Let me know how it goes!

Edit - retried upload link Thanks Tattie didn't notice it hadn't worked.

Feel free to try it. I'm doing it for the community after all

Got the link up too, which helps ;p

Edit - Just a though in case anyone can't open the config if they need to. Just use notepad. It may not recognize the .dat extension automatically.

DVader, great idea! I didn't know you could launch other apps from within DB. I've done it before in VB and VC++. Some kind of shell execute command or something or other. Anyways, when I run it it gives me an error that it couldn't load sound at line 19. Which audio file is that? Is that the .ogg or the .wav file? I suspect it's the .ogg file, because media player won't play it. I don't believe I've ever worked with them before, even when I worked with DBPro. I suspect my "shiny new laptop" may not have the proper codecs for playing .ogg files. I will investigate further. Thanks though!

@Imchasingyou: I'm having the same issue (read above)- I'm right now writing a small app to see if it will play in my DBPro. I'll be back in 15-30 min. (I've had a few beers and it's been a few months since I've mucked around with DBPro)

Interesting, my DBPro (I use Synergy editor) won't play either of the audio files, .ogg or .wav. Doesn't give me an error, though. I don't know what's up! I even tried an endless loop yet it run and closes. Have to admit, I installed DBPro on this laptop but have never actually used it. I may have other issues with DBPro and win 8.1. I remember having them on my desktop. I don't recall what I did to get it working on the desktop, but I do remember it took me a couple days to figure it out!

I finally figured it out! LOL, I hadn't moved his media folder (VideosMod) into my game Files folder. Sometimes it pays off when you follow directions, lol! Great job once again, DVader and thank you! Now, I just gotta figure out why my DBPro isn't working right on this laptop. I went through this on my desktop several months ago, where DBPro wouldn't even run. It runs here but no audio?

well. I spent a while doing quick vids and the main item and what not then all of a sudden, it stopped working again!

Shouldnt this run straight from the extracted folder by clicking the Intro icon in the folder? I mean your temp files are there and my thinking says it should run even with out my content in it. launching it gives the same error

the folder name is videosMod not VideoMod as I typed this a few times before I took a good look at it. Give it a try.

Works like a charm. Also Only alpha numeric in folder name and exe name of your game.

Thank you for this tasty tidbit.

Glad some people have got it to work. It was late here when I posted and I hung on awhile but had to go to bed

The sound it is trying to load is the jungle-wind.ogg file I have included. Make sure the VideosMod folder is copied to your files folder within the stand alone game folder. I forgot to include instructions to edit the config, bar actually giving you the example in the readme. You need to change the game folder name and game exe name also, else it will be looking for mine. You could change it to a .wav effect possibly, but I had no issues running the ogg file here.

I knocked up the readme real quick so I probably missed other stuff.

As to making a video. For now if you just edit the config to have the correct name for your game folder and game exe, the intro has a dummy vid just to make it easier to test.

Easiest way to test it.

Copy a standalone game you have made (always best not to use your only one )

Paste this into the Reloaded IntroMaker/intro folder

Edit the config file to match your game folder, and game.exe name.

Copy the VideosMod folder into your files folder in your main game folder. Next to all the other main folders you are used to going into for stuff.

Run the intro.

That should work with included dummy video's. After that it's just a matter of making actual vids and you have it done! Obviously you may want to change the sound effect for starting the game also. Again just change the line in the config to match your sound effect.

If you are really stuck, I can probably look at adding it in for you if you send a demo. But following those instructions, should work.

Edit - Shouldnt this run straight from the extracted folder by clicking the Intro icon in the folder?

Yes. Make sure both your game name and folder name have been changed in the config. First 2 lines. First is the game folder name. Second is the exe name. You must include .exe there as in the example. Make sure the VideosMod folder is in the files folder of your game.

It is case sensitive so if your name has a capital you need to match it in the config also.

Edit- Actually given the varied results here, would you prefer me to make it more automatic? Or prefer me to add more options next?

Ive tried to run this directly with out adding my stuff, it still cant find the line 19! Example, download the file, extract the file and then run the Intro. It hangs at the line 19, It cant find that line straight out of the download.

Its a great thing when i got it to run and what broke it for em last night after putting in all the time to make vids and a "Main" image was adding the main image, then i got as totally different error. Thus far, irregardless of what I do, it still fails at the line 19 and Ive followed the directions step for step.

Im making a final attempt today and will post back with my results. One suggestion Id like to offer is that the game actually be loading in the backgroud as the video plays. This is only adding to the excessive load times.

Not possible I'm afraid, or not that I can see. I did try it, but as suspected it interferes with Reloaded. I literally have to close this app after calling the game to run to prevent problems. In the program, not manually.

I sent Tattiebojangle a version custom set for his game and it worked ok. Let me know your game folder name and exe name and I can try the same here for you. He said his attempt looked identical but mine worked the other didn't. Weird issue. DB can be odd at times. I can make you a custom file you should merely have to copy over your game into then.

Lol, I really need to automate this for people down the line. Good job I never released my first version, or people would have got real confused lol! Many files all over the place to change

Anyway I'll try that, a custom file, if you want me to.

The file is simply titled Scifi as I dont have what I need to actually make a game yet from the engine. Friend me on steam if you use it. Id like to chat you up some real time. Gen - Imchasinyou

Can the incorrect title effect the loading of the sound though? Dont seem logically related. last I spoke to Tattie, his failed with a new error. I think its posted above

Only sorted Tattie out about 30 mins ago or so, don't think he has posted here since then. So your game exe and folder are called Scifi? I'll set one up for that and post it. It's case sensitive also so it needs to be Scifi and not scifi.

Here's the customized version for a game called Scifi.

Edit - file failed first time, I see imchasinyou has got it working, but it may help people to see the file structure possibly.

This is how I did mine. It works perfectly but my intro didnt capture. Switch to HD and then start the video over, its WAY more clear!

Fixed it to show my intro that was done real fast on a simple map just to show the function.

Hard to see even on 480p here. 720p would have been better. It may help people out though, just really difficult to see the names.

Nice vid Pirate Mike. Very cool Glad you like it, and thanks!
@ imchasinyou, normally I record at 720 or 1080p and then save the video in movie maker at recommended settings with the h64 codec. You tube then will give you the higher options when you have uploaded it. Even if your movie looks okay on lower res for you, youtube soon messes it up! Even higher def are worse than before uploading!
Although I have altered version 1.1 a little to attempt to make it easier to use.

I will be uploading the new improved version very soon!

Video is clear now though so people will be able to see what to do!

I've already posted the new version btw, it's on the first post to make it easy to find. If everyone really wants I can probably do a video to show it being setup with the new version. I have updated the readme a little in the meantime though. Copy everything out of your game folder. Paste it into the example folder. Rename the example folder if you wish, you don't have to. Edit the first 2 lines of the config to suit. Run Menu for the menu and Intro menu Maker for the editor.

If people are still having difficulty I can probably write another program to copy all the files over, or add it to the editor perhaps, although a separate program will probably be easier to implement fast, without breaking the existing code

So, no comments on the latest version? Has anyone tried it? I was thinking to add more, but am unsure what people would want most. More options with existing menu options, better fade between the videos (if I can, I should be able to, but I know videos are a bit odd in DB), or just easier installation?

Let me know. I'm sort of waiting on your answers before I go any further

It would be cool if lee could give you a hint from some of his coding regarding windows ect you could in theory make your menu run the game in a window or even run within the menu without any border this way it would be clean and fluid when changing from menu to game sort of thing.

Not sure what can be done with the transition between clicking start and running the game, as I have to run the exe and then close the menu, so as not to conflict. Also we don't want the menu taking up resources, we need all we can for the game! I made the menu full screen to make it look better, but I can set it to a window if wanted.

Had a quick play with a fade between into and the menu, but as I expected videos seem to ignore it. I can wipe the video out, or see it, no in-between seems possible. A shame, but not a biggie.

So now I'm thinking either, adding some animation possibilities with the main menu, such as making your main Title drop in, having the menu options change as you hover over, or adding extra options entirely, such as graphical settings, divide texture size, resolution etc. The last could take a bit of doing, but is possible I think.

Sorry, DVader, I haven't tried your new one, I've been busy trying to improve my modeling and texturing skills since my competition level was a bust! I figure I'd just keep trying to improve it and as the engine progresses, it will be better and hopefully so will I, and maybe there will be another one at a future date. TGC can't deny that the competition brought a lot of interest and helped improve the engine ten-fold over what we were working with at the start of the contest! Even though this beta doesn't work for me as it should, I'm sure it'll only get better. Anyway, I will try your new intro system in a few!

Great job! The customization options are cool. Personally, I like it full screen. It just wouldn't seem right in a window. As for the transition between the start and actually starting, maybe use the timer to delay closing the menu? Have the length of delay adjustable by the end user? How many games start with the player under fire immediately? That's the only scenario where that would suck that I can think of.

Giving it a try now.

Edit: Works out of the box. Nice. I will redo the menu I had and post another video of it working later today. Thanks again.

@DVader : I hope my work on adding the title page mechanism to the next build will not screw up your very cool project. I understand your title system will run the actual game executable, but after the next build it would run into another title page An

@lee maybe have it an option to build without the title page so things like this could load straight into the game
