Perhaps you will need some sort of teleporter, (lianas?).
Love this style, thinking in western game.
I though cartoon give'u a chance to perzonalice textures
Very nice work!.

I am holding you to that! haha. Also, did you mean to ask E30 Legend where he hangs out?

Or is e40 a club in Preston I didn't know about?

@3Com,

I already have teleporters in the level. They are giant stone structures. I will be showcasing them soon enough

As mentioned above, I have already modelled some 'teleporters'. I like to think of them as portals. It's more fitting with the theme or genre of the models.

I tested a few little bits with them and I am happy with how they have turned out.

Here are a few new entities that have made it into the pack.

Pitch fork

Portal

Hay bale

Here is a little video to show how they look.

Comments and crits always welcomed!

Cheers

Jay.

Great work Jay, I love the way you've used a plane to make it look like you can see the other side of the portal.

WHA...........wh.............That isn't how I did it..........shhhhhh........stop telling everyone my secrets!

Haha. Cheers man. It's such a simple thing, but, I think it gives a nice effect and lets the player know, where they are about to go.

Jay this looks so good...

Could you also have some kind of controller station... so you could change the picture/destination
to different islands... that would look amazing...
I suppose you could hide all the pictures and only show the selected destination one..
I have not played with portals.. will the destination portal cause a problem.. will have to look this up..

Can't wait to see what you come up with next..

Not the most exciting update, but, an update nonetheless.

Quote: "Could you also have some kind of controller station... so you could change the picture/destination

No idea how to achieve this, but, I can always look into it! The idea was to have static portals that always went to the same place. They would be used for jumping islands, so, I would want the player to know and learn where each portal goes.

I have been busy adding some of the less interesting items to the pack.....rocks. Yes, I know, but, every pack has to have them and this is no different.

So, here are two varieties of rocks so far

...... and rocks of a different kind. Gem Stones. Big ones!

I am going to adding a number of different variations of the rocks and the trees, but, they are quite boring to model, so, I won't be working on them immediately; however, be safe in the knowledge, more trees and rocks will appear in the pack.

As always, comments and criticisms are always welcome.

Cheers

Jay.

Then should be bad island for those being wrong choosing portal.

i was asking e40 where he hung out, lol,

as i said before and will say again very clever techniques going on, the black aura has me baffled, and i will not attempt to disect as it is jforth stylee, and i for one will just sit back and admire your work, well done with shaders and some very nice texturing.

have a pretend beer for now.

Why thank you sir! I appreciate the pretend beer; I shall save it until Friday.

The pack is coming along nicely now. There are a few more models made, some that even add more fantasy! We are now at 32 standard assets.

I have started working on a modular building kit, giving the player the ability to actually go inside the buildings.

So, we have different sections to put down, to create buildings. Different textures and more models will be added, to add variety to the buildings.

This is what we have so far,

And this is what you can create with only a few models.

Here are the extra models that I mentioned earlier; the ones that add the extra fantasy! Ooooh, glowing crystals. I bet you have never seen these before......

Any thoughts or comments, please feel free to mash your keyboards and tell me what you think.

Cheers

Jay.

Epic mate, this is going to make a really great game.

My only crit is I'm not sure about the wavy pattern on the building but it does make it very unique.

Really love the style you are going with here. I am trying to figure out in my head this effect is created - my first guess is the model is duplicated and scaled .1 or .2 larger, uniformly, and a black texture added, with the mesh faces fliped so the back of the faces create the outline. Just a guess though, impressive stuff! I really like the scenery pieces too, the rocks gems and glowstones. Those thumbnails look nice. I should put more time into rendering some quality thumbnails, alas i am pretty impatient for that sort of thing.

Cheers buddy! You don't understand the internal turmoil I have been going through with the textures! Do I keep them as they are (pseudo realistic) or do I make them more cartoon like?! I have been going through so many different variations! I haven't actually made any new models in the past few days, just because I still haven't decided which direction to go! haha. I think I am going to stick with pseudo-realistic.

You got it in one! I wish people would stop giving away my secrets! haha. The thumbnails aren't rendered. They are simply screenshots of the model in Blender, then taken into GIMP, lasso tool around the model and copy that into a new 64x64 image. Simples.

Thanks for the comments.

Cheers.

Cheers dude. I unfortunately, can't take all the credit for this. I didn't actually come up with the idea. I did a lot of research on the best way to achieve a cartoon look with a fantasy theme. I saw this and instantly fell in love with it. I haven't done a fantasy theme before, so, I wanted to try something a little different. Although, with this being so individual, I have come to realise, that I will need to create EVERYTHING for someone to make use of this as a pack! Weapons, AI, landscapes, everything!

Quote: "I still can't get my head around how you did it lol

Truly epic !"

I will throw a small tutorial together for you, to show you the workflow. It's actually very simple.

Cheers mate.

Hello sir. You haven't visited these parts (my thread) in some time. Good to see you again. Thanks Wolf.

Thanks. That's quite the compliment. There are much better models that these on the forums, but, I appreciate the sentiment. Cheers!

Quote: "Great stuff unfamillia, I particularly love the dwellings."

Thanks very much. The dwellings are all part of a modular kit that is currently being worked on. As the kit stands, you can build any size dwellings; from a single story one square room, to a 4 floor mansion. I will show a video soon.

To everyone else.

My Wife and I are expecting our new baby very soon, so, I have been very quiet on the forums and haven't really been working on anything game related. This pack is still in the works and is going to be huge. I have started to make a list of items that I want to add to the pack using Trello. This way, I will be able to keep tabs on where I am and what I still need to do.

You can keep tabs on the pack and the models being added here.

I'm not sure if you can add things, but, if you can, please feel free to add something to the list if you feel it will help the pack.

Cheers

Jay.

It's a lovely sentiment. Thanks mate.

I feel bad for not updating with a screenshot. So, here is a small domicile I made with the a few of the current modular pieces.

The new baby has still not arrived! So, I currently have a very cranky wife. I decided to spend a little time on the model pack and really made some decent headway.

I have managed to tick a few items off the list and have tested a few items in GameGuru.

Here is some eye candy for you all.

This is what you can build with the current modular pieces

I made a simple rope bridge to connect some of the floating islands, instead of using portals.

Here is the bridge again. I need to change out the wood texture on this as it appears to bright in GG.

Log piles for the furnace

Here is the furnace

One of the canvas sacks

A few standard assets and some new ones

That's all for now folks.

Now, back to twiddling my thumbs and waiting for baby to arrive.

Comments and criticisms always welcome.

Cheers

Jay.

Lol my only comment would be keep yourself occupied and not sitting there waiting, otherwise will seem a very very long wait, aside from that your pack is coming along extremely well, wish you all the luck mate, my Lil one is just 8 moths so I know how much time it can take. Hope it won't be too long before we see you hanging round these forums again after the bub arrives

Very true! I do keep myself busy around the house. My wife is very immobile now! The due date is already gone (27th March), so, I have been doing a LOT more to help.

Quote: "aside from that your pack is coming along extremely well, wish you all the luck mate, "

Thanks mate. I don't know if you have seen the Trello board I have set up for the pack? You will see from there that I still have a long way to go before the pack is finished!

Quote: "my Lil one is just 8 moths so I know how much time it can take. Hope it won't be too long before we see you hanging round these forums again after the bub arrives"

The time just disappears! This will be my third (and final) child, so, I am already accustomed to sleepless nights, the sound of crying and a house that constantly smells like next doors dog! It shouldn't take too long to get back to normality

Cheers

only just seeing this now, great style, i like borderlands but it hates me - the 2D on 3D gives me massive headaches - really think the style here makes very impressive models though (and without quite as much effort im sure because of the lack of high detail needed)... wish i could convert all my media to look like that, i see you have big plans for the style, hope to see it on the store one day

grats on the 3rd (and final ) baby - when it gets here anyway

Thanks SmallG.

I do have pretty big plans for this little project of mine; maybe too big! Only time will tell.

Quote: "I can't wait to see this game finished, however long that may be."

I have just started to test different game concepts to see what works best with the style. I wanted to make it a first person shooter with weapons and AI, but, I also wanted to try a puzzle game. I still haven't decided, but, I am more swayed towards the puzzle option.

Quote: "With this, Dimoxinil's WIP and Wolf's Acythian there are some interesting looking projects on the go"

Dimoxinils and Wolf's games both look amazing! It's kind of expected from Wolf, but, I absolutely love what Dimoxinil is doing!

I will be back in full force hopefully very soon and will be able to get cracking on more videos and more tutorials. For now, I am concentrating on the family and getting in a little time modelling and playing with GameGuru.

@Everyone else,

As I said above, I have been playing with a puzzle concept for a game. Not much of a puzzle yet, more just collecting gems, but, the puzzle will come later, when you will have to go through portals and traverse the floating islands to collect all of the gems.

I hope you like it.

Comments and criticisms always welcome.

Cheers

Jay.

Here is how the pack stands currently. The worrying thing is, I don't think I am even part way through! I still feel as though I have a long way to go before this is finished!

Here is the what is in the 'Room' folder

Is anyone looking forward to this pack? Or have I dragged it out too long?! Haha.

The scope of this is truely admirable!! Its consistent enough to be the definitive look of a full game. I believe this will sell well and you'd definately deserve it, pal!

Thanks. I will look into the grass texture. The more I work on this pack, the more I feel I am losing the cartoon feel. I might change the texture and see if it looks better.

Cheers Wolf! That's very kind of you! My aim is to have enough assets so that the user doesn't need any more model packs to work with it. Mainly because, this wouldn't work with other model packs! (I didn't think of that before I started this project!)

Quote: "this pack will be excellent, Looking forward to this one immensely"

Good to hear! I am glad there is a little bit of interest for this project.

I have been trying to make a working cave system with the different varieties of rocks I am making. So, far, you can make some pretty impressive looking caves! (with some glowing mushrooms in there for good measure!)

I hope you guys like it so far!

Cheers

Jay.

Lol!! This is great! I liked your scifi stuff, but this kind of modeling suits you much better. Did you know that the original version of Spyra had a pastelcolored toon look? Well...now you know... just saying, that a lot can be done with this toon style. Not just borderlands.

The rocks have a little bit too much definition on the texture to look all too toonish though.

Hey! Boosterpacks, additional packs... custom work.

Back in the late early 2000s I grabbed a game from the bargain bin that had a pretty decent tool style. "Hype: the time quest". A kids game with playmobil figurines...and an oddly deep storyline for that kind of game You where a timetraveling knight trying to stop some evil warrior...classic! However, to do so you had to travel through time and witnessed the same place through different ages. characters you met grew old and eventually died. They dont have developing lore like this in current AAA titles for adults But I digress, just thought I'd mention it, it had interesting toon landscape design back then.

You might also take a look at the "drawn" art style adventure game "memoria". Just don't buy it, its tremendously boring and never really pays off.

Either way! you do awesome stuff! please keep doing so

Thanks for the comment Wolf! I am really enjoying working on this pack, I feel as though I have more freedom and I am not tied to certain constraints as much, as with realistic models.

I will try to continue to please you!

I haven't made any new models recently; but, I haven't been slacking off. I have been working on a different texture set for this model pack. I would really appreciate peoples views on this variation. I have decided to go with hand drawn, REALLY cartoon textures.

I would normally say, "comments are welcome", in this instance, I would appreciate some comments to see what people think of the new direction. Should I carry on with these new textures? Or would people prefer me to stick to pseudo realistic?

Cheers

Jay.

These look great, I have thought about trying my hand at cartoon entities.

That's good to hear! I like them more as well. Plus, it's made me practice my hand painted texture skills! I forgot how much I used to enjoy doing it!

Thanks. Try it, it's great fun to work with the cartoon genre.

Here is a video of the new textures in action and an almost completed level of them in game.

As I have been working on the new textures, I have been practicing my hand painted techniques. In the process, I have completed a number of textures that I don't actually need, so, I thought I would give one such texture away to you guys!

Hopefully you can make some use of it. (it's fully seamless and can be easily tiled.)

Cheers

Jay.

To be honest, I think I prefer the old texture style; however, both styles are very appealing. Maybe you should provide customers with both and let them be the judge.

I haven't posted anything for a while; s, I thought I had better keep up appearances!

I have been working on the model pack, the game and a character for the pack.

The character is an NPC (enemy AI).

I like the way he looks, I just can't decide on how big to make him! Do I want him towering over you or the same height?

Any thoughts are more welcome.

Cheers

Jay.

I have decided to make this guy pretty tall. I have gone for 12'.

I have put some crystals on him, to show that he is my precious. He looks mean, but, he is actually quite lovely!

Cheers
