thanks for the comments guys

texturing is not that hard to learn,it just takes time to get the basics down but once you have them its fairly simple.

i made a very basic texturing tutorial a few years back that may help a few of you out, just click the download button & its yours for free.

let me know if it helps ?

Really nice looking work there Henry. Are you going to be creating an entire town this way? Is that all one model or a group of models that will be placed together in Reloaded?

the plan is to make enough buildings & props to make a small multiplayer sized map similar to the ones in COD black ops 2

Quote: "Is that all one model or a group of models that will be placed together in Reloaded?"

they are all seperate models (although some share the same texture sheets )

i placed them like that so people can see the sort of thing i am aiming for.

Thanks for the tutorial, Henry! I read it, printed it out and it will be very helpful. I understand UV mapping, etc, I just don't usually get much time to spend on learning how to make it "look right". I do have a folder of folders of folders of textures that I've created and/or collected over several years (along with usage licenses), so I have plenty to pick from, modify, etc. but for some reason mine just don't end up looking very good. LOL! I will stick to it, though, I refuse to give up. Thank you again!

As always Henry, great looking work!

One minor crit if I may?

The texture under the windows is identical. I know it won't make much difference as the two windows that are together are on the back of the building.

cheers mate good to hear your working at modeling im sure it wont take you long to catch up with me

thanks i try hard with my textures they help hide my crappy models lol

im always open to crits mate , thats what helps me keep improving.

this model was made from me playing about with modular building to speed up my workflow ,i made 1 texture sheet with the idea of building multiple models from the one sheet.so far i have 17 separate components that can be combined to make various models from ,the down side is repeating textures but i plan to hide some of them with props again made from the one sheet.

[img][/img]

that said i think i will need to go larger on the texture to fit more variation on to the sheet.should still save game memory in the long run if multiple models are sharing the same texture sheet.

What size is your texture sheet? I use an atlas texture for my sciFi corridors and I have made that 2048x2048. This allows me to get essentially 16x 512 texture segments. Plenty of variety going on then.

I will post my texture for you if you like?

Cheers

Jay.

EDIT - Just realised, that might have come across as me trying to teach you something you don't already know! Not my intention. It's just, I always like to see how other artists lay out there textures so, I guessed you might be the same.

Its a 1024x1024 texture as I think reloaded needs the higher resolution ,but your right I think if I go to 2048 I will have 3x as much room to add variation for larger models.

Please post your texture as I to like to see how others do things ,I am under no illusion that I know everything I can always learn from others.

Nice work Henry, been seeing a lot of shared texture maps being used now. It's a good and a bad thing depending on what they are intended for. It's a real balancing act creating for many users rather than the ease of a single development.

The main concern is using a large Atlas on a lot of objects and then a user takes one small model and calls a huge texture which isn't required, in fact calls three huge textures in Reloaded.

The stock buildings in Reloaded use a 2048x2048 template and there is an incredible amount of wasted empty space with a sliver of wall texture only 512 wide and a space the same size next to it which could have been used to prevent some repetition of the texture. This sliver is tiled and mirrored around the walls and is really obvious if you look at it.

Mostly repetition can be gotten away with but not when it's sitting right beside each other or worse...mirrored, I am beginning to wonder why they are so against multi texturing, if you think about it this is exactly what Classic did with segments, some of which even used variations of the same texture and could lead to a lot of these, and also dynamic entity's.

For some reason this is now considered a performance drain, they may be right since Classic lagged badly but to me that was always shaders and AI at the bottom of it and how FPSC handled it all.

Guess what I am trying to say is that the player really doesn't notice it too much, they should be too busy trying to survive.

Liking this stuff very much
