Lee reports that he has achieved a significant improvement in FPS:

Quote: "And how did I manage that I hear you scream! Well...first I fixed a bug which caused ALL the grass to render in the shadow camera renders, which is not required at all, and then second thing was to detect (using some occlusion commands I wrote a while ago) whether the water quad was rendering any pixels that where visible on the screen. If that value was zero, I skipped the reflection camera render. These two measures saw me jump from 40 fps up to 60 fps and the end of one of my little goals.

"

I await Beta4 with anticipation.

Great news! Hopefully the draw distance will be increased again, especailly as their is an option to reduce it on the TAB screen anyway.

From what I have read, and that is all the blogs Matty has helped Lee out in the quad engine, his excellent Dark Occlusion product is pretty sweet! So I'd encourage a cheer for Matty as well! He is a helpful chap, giving me some great help with a version of dark physics he was updating at the time!

Great news about the speed increase. The bug in grass shadow rendering could explain some of the major slowdown issues I have had.

Yeah just turning grass off can double your FPS I have noticed. Can't wait until next release.

I finally tested beta 3. So, I'm waiting with baited breath B4. No I didn't swallow any fish. OK, so it's spelled "bated." What do I know?

B3 did show improvement with my "Bubbling Under" graphics card. GEForce 650 Ti with 4 MB of dedicated graphics memory. Default loaded ground is 65-70 FPS and the river fpm between 35 and 55 FPS. Much better than my old card but I hope it will still be better than this.

When in doubt -- C4 :heh, heh, heh:

Only 4MB on a Geforce 650TI? Even my old 260GTS is not far short of a gig, 896MB I believe. Perhaps you mean 4 gig? Heh, 4MB takes me back to when you could add memory to your card by physically adding memory chips The S3 virge what a beast that card was ;p

Yes that's the 4GB Ti edition, and a lovely little beast it is too! I have the BOOST edition of that card right now and it's doing me no harm at all

Hogging the awesome since 1999
